If we were having coffee, I’d be wearing shades because I have a migraine today. I was going to say that it feels like my eyes are bleeding, because I’m all about the drama and it hurts! But, as I also wanted to take part in Linda’s stream of consciousness Saturday, I’m going to say that my head is banging like a big bass drum!
We’d also be indoors, somewhere quiet, so I didn’t hear the clacking of heels on a tiled floor, or the ca-ching of a cash register in the coffee shop. There would be no clatter of dishes, no annoying click from a writer’s pen, the creak of a chair, beep of a mobile phone. Okay, I’m going to stop now, because I can almost hear your groan! I’m sure you can guess what Linda’s prompt is!
Which of course would lead to a discussion on onomatopoeic words, because they are fun and an excellent tool in poetry. Another excellent segue to talk about my writing practice when it comes to haikus. I’m really enjoying Ronovan’s weekly prompt, and he certainly puts the challenge in, well… a challenge!
I’d ask about your week, sip my water and gobble down a few more pain killers. Then I’d sit back and relax as you caught me up.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that it’s been a busy week; interpreting, writing and blogging. I’ve taken part in a number of challenges and though I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, I’m going to be taking some time to switch off this weekend and spend some time with my girls.
I’m sure at some point I’d show you the fantasy map I’ve been working on for the Fractured series. You’d try so hard not to laugh, because things are not going well, but I’d give you permission. I can’t seem to translate what’s in my head onto paper. It’s like finding an image for Maddison – nothing reflects how vivid she is in my imagination. I think an art class is in order.
I’d also mention my new writing prompt series, which I titled Mel’s Midweek Writing Menagerie. I’m really excited about it, and the series still links back to Featured Fiction so readers have a place to access the contributions. I don’t often take you by surprise, but you would stare dumbfounded (and hopefully not choke on a mouthful of coffee), when I tell you I even set up a hashtag (#MelsWritingMenagerie). Now all I have to do is learn what to do with it 😉
If we were having coffee I would thank you for your company, and apologise that I have to cut things short. I’m going to lie down in a dark room. When I surface again, I’ll head over to Diana’s place, and Linda’s, to catch up with all my friends.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.
Until next time.
Mel

I can’t believe how many of us get migraines. Yikes–what’s that about. I collect ways to describe my headaches, things like “if only her head would stop exploding”.
I love the way your do that – collect descriptive words and phrases. I’ve seen some funny descriptions of a migraine – I like the head exploding comparison…it certainly fits 😀
Sorry you’re not feeling well! Migraines can be the worst. I rarely get them myself, thank goodness, but I’ve definitely been there. I pretty much just have to sleep them off, so kudos on managing to still do something while you have one!
Thanks 😀 It’s actually receded almost to nothing now, certainly manageable, so I’m almost giddy!
Don’t want to stay long. I hate that you have a migraine. Will let you take some meds and go relax in a quiete, dark room.

Thanks, Barbara. I appreciate that 😀 I’m feeling more like a human being, so I’m making my rounds shortly!
I hope you are feeling better now. xxx
Thanks so much. I feel so much better 😀 xx
I also get migraines, so I feel your pain. It’s so hard to function during them and a new feature to my migraines is flashing lights in my eyes which stops me from being able to read, its so frustrating and then the pain starts shortly after. Hope you are feeling better 🙂
Nightmare. I don’t get the light show but I get other symptoms to warn me off impending doom (or a little pain at least!) I am feeling better, thank you and look forward to catching up with you soon 😀
Awww…I hope you feel better soon. I’m excited to check out your prompt challenges 😀
Thanks so much 🙂 I’m feeling so much better today so I’ll be visiting this afternoon. I look forward to catching up with you.
I started having migraines when I went to college. It was horrible. I used to have absolutely crippling cramps but when I went to college, the cramps stopped and the migraines began (yeah right at that time). Then as I got older the migraines progressed to the point where they stopped me in my tracks. I would not be able to function and would end up in bed for a day or so. Then I became a mom and had to function, migraine or not. At got so bad that for many years, my migraines would last for four or so days, go away for a day, then come back for another four days, repeat, repeat, repeat. That’s when I was a single mom of three. That was toughest because I had to function and could not pamper myself. Horrible migraines…the kind that leave you almost blind (I would actually have to hang on to the walls to get from one room to the next)…the kind that leave you running to the bathroom to throw up when you smell food…the kind that made my head feel like someone was on top of it with a jack hammer. Yeah. Fun migraines. Then I got older and with menopause came a cessation of my migraines. I get about two per year now and they are not super bad, just bad enough to blur my vision a bit and let me know they are there. I hope yours is gone now.
Wow! I will never ever complain about a migraine again. I don’t know how you managed to function as a single mother with that amount of pain. You deserve a badge of honour. When mine are bad I can be in bed for a day or two and get the sickness. Occasionally I get vertigo as one of the symptoms and have to crawl to the bathroom because the world is spinning so badly. But the bad ones are nowhere near as frequent as you described. I’m in awe of you. I’m so glad they’re not longer debilitating 😀
Sometimes I look back at those days and wonder how we got through it all. The kids still remember about “Mom’s bad headaches”. I was lucky to have good kids and a couple of wonderful neighbors that helped out when necessary.
That’s really great. It’s invaluable when you have someone to rely on and neighbours can be a big help 😀
Hope your migraine disappears quickly and doesn’t return for the longest time.
Thanks so much, Rosie. That’s lovely. I’m feeling so much better today 😀
I hope your migraine goes away soon.
Thanks, Patricia 😀
I have the same problem whenever I try to put the stories I make up in my head down on paper… They just don’t seem to come out right (or at all, sometimes). Hope your feeling better. Headaches (especially Migraines) really suck.
Thanks for the coffee! I’ll have to stop by the Menagerie soon and try my hand. It looks like fun! I hope your headache goes away soon. Have a great week!
Thanks, Sarah 🙂 I’m excited about the Menagerie – I really enjoy creating the prompts.
I hope your migraine went away quickly – they’re so debilitating! Sorry it’s taken me so long to get to reading your post. I’m glad I did!
Thanks for participating in SoCS, Mel! Now to check out your link. 😀
Hi Linda 🙂 No worries, I’m so behind myself, though I try so hard to keep up! I enjoy SoCS and will try to take part more. It’s a lot of fun.
I hope you’re well.
I am, thanks very much for asking. 🙂
You’re more social than I am… when I have a migraine, I would pass on the coffee and just ask if we could catch up next week 🙂 Maybe I need better meds, haha! I’ve been out of the writing loop for a while but I’ll have to catch up on your new writing prompt… well, it’s not exactly new now, but hey, better late than never, eh? 🙂
That would be wonderful, Janna. I love your work, and always look forward to reading your stories 😀
